PSP Go and PS3 Slim

This one’s a bit of a double whammy for Sony. First off, the PSP go. Pricing has been released for the tiny handheld in Australia and the news is not good. $450 for the PSP Go. No that is not a typo, $450. I think that’s disgusting. Australians pay through the nose for gaming, but this latest round of price gouging is ridiculous.

The PSP Go retails for $250 in the US. And at the current exchange rate, that translates into just over $300 Australian. So what’s with the extra $150? I can understand having to pay a bit of a premium for shipping to Australia, but $150? What are they made of lead? What makes this worse is the fact that you can buy a used PSP 1000 for $150, or PSP 2000 used for $200. Or even a used 3000 for $250. Yep, that’s right. You can get a psp 2000, and a psp 3000 for the price of one PSP go. And what’s more, those two psps can do everything a PSP go can(except fit comfortably in you pocket). More even because since it has a UMD drive, you can pick up cheap used games quite easily. Although you will need to carry all those damned things around with you. I shake my head at you Sony.

I do applaud Sony for embracing the indie developers with the announcement of PSP minis. I hope Unity(my game engine of choice) will support publishing for the PSP in the future, but there’s nothing announced yet in that regards.

Now, on to the really good. The PS3 slim. This is a sexy little system. Although it isn’t much smaller than the standard PS3, it’s enough to make it a little less overbearing in your home theatre setup. It has all the goodies that one would expect from a standard ps3(except for linux support), but it’s in a nicer package. And it’s interesting how a little can go a long way. Realistically, this system is not much different from the “full-sized” model. And yet it’s created a nice buzz in the industry. I haven’t been interested in the PS3 for most of the console’s lifespan. But this new refresh has my interest piqued.

Oh, and the best things about it? $500 Aus. Which is a good price considering you’re likely to be dropping $400 on a passable bluray player anyways. Especially when you consider the PSP Go is only $50 cheaper. That’s something I can’t get over. $50 more gets you so much more game. So if you’re in the market for a bluray player and like to get your game on, check this one out. Or maybe look into used PS3s that are being dumped by their owners in order to pick up the sexy new slim ones. Although current pricing has old PS3s being more expensive the the slim. That is likely to change soon though.
